Why is Barovia called Barovia? ›

Geographically, the whole of Barovia is a remote valley between Mt Ghakis and Mt Baratok, now hemmed in by the mists on both ends. Strahd named the whole valley Barovia for his father, Barov, after winning the wars that followed King Barov's death.

Originally a location in a forgotten world of the Prime Material plane, the entire valley was transported to the Shadowfell by mists controlled by evil entities known as the Dark Powers. The realm was a prison for its darklord, the vampire Strahd von Zarovich, as well as the entire population of the valley.

Strahd has had to battle at least two darklords who had entered his domain in the past; Azalin Rex the lich, and Lord Soth the death knight.

Barovians are the people native to the land of Barovia. Most Barovians are dour folk, making a meager living while desperately trying not to draw the attention of Strahd. All native Barovians seem to be human, and many react to non-human races as an oddity at best or as one of Strahd's devils at worst.

The Wizard of wines was able to grow grapes and supply Barovia with 3 different types of wine Purple Grapemash No. 6, Red Dragon Crush, and Champagne Du Le Stomp.

Blood of the Vine was a shoddy tavern in the village of Barovia, in the Domain of Dread of the same name.

It is named after two castles named Castle Ravenloft, the first of which is ironically outside of Ravenloft.

The realm was a prison for its dark lord, the vampire Strahd von Zarovich, as well as the entire population of the valley. Adventurers frequently find themselves wandering into Barovia, but once they emerge from the otherwise impenetrable mists that surround the valley, they are unable to escape.

Not even Strahd can get out, that is his curse. On a related note, there is only one confirmed character to have ever escaped Barovia. It was Vecna, in a time before he became a god.
