Remember their life
The story of
Gary Alan Youngs, October 6, 1950 - August 19, 2024Gary, middle son of Bill and Nell Youngs, just shy of his 74th birthday, passed away peacefully in his sleep. Friends and family members would alternately describe Gary as one of-a-kind, quirky, loving, artistic, hard-working, fun loving, foodie, grill master (particularly his famous chicken thighs), cat person, creative, stubborn, but above all he was a devoted husband, great friend, life-long fraternity brother, funny uncle and tolerant brother. Gary passed away at his home in Castle Rock, Colorado, nearby his birthplace of Colorado Springs. In between 1950 and 2024, being the son of a newspaperman, he lived alternately in various towns across the country including Louisville, KY and Memphis, TN, but settled eventually in Lompoc, California in the mid 1950s. In 1961 the family moved to Inglewood, CA followed then to the Central Coast (Cambria) of California. From 1983 to 2004 Gary and Cheryl lived in the San Luis Obispo area, Palm Springs, back to Cambria, and then Sonora CA. In 2004 they moved to Castle Rock, Colorado to be near family. After graduating from Morningside High School (Inglewood, CA) in 1970, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Kiska, as a quartermaster, for the duration of his four-year enlistment, where his deployment took him to numerous ports and countries around the world. After his military service it was back to school. 1977 marked Gary’s graduation from Pepperdine University with a degree in Journalism.Throughout most of his life he had a passion for wood carving and creative writing. Wood carving was doubtless encouraged by dad, Bill, who pursued the hobby professionally for over 30 years. Gary’s natural talent led him to become manager of the California Carvers Guild Museum and Gallery in San Simeon, CA and establish his own Bristle Cone Gallery later in Palm Springs, CA. As for his writing endeavors, Gary authored Tasty Chin Music, a quasi science fiction novel with an emphasis on the first female pitcher in Major League Baseball, serving on the Colorado Rockies franchise team.Gary Youngs is survived by wife and life partner of 41 years, Cheryl Stacy, brothers Jim Youngs and Tim Youngs; son Bobby Youngs, granddaughters Emilie, Megan and Audrey Youngs.
